Second seed Bartoli saw off China’s Zheng Jie in a hard-fought contest 7-5 6-3 as she converted five of 10 break points to win through.

Zheng was up a break three times in the first set and served for the set at 5-4 but the Frenchwoman proved an obdurate opponent as she battled back in the duo’s first-ever meeting.

Zheng’s compatriot Li, meanwhile, fared much better in overcoming Iveta Benesova 6-3 6-3.

The number six seed broke early in both sets and dropped only one service game as she wrapped up victory in one hour nine minutes.
